Avoid common asthma triggers
Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the
United States.

According to the National Institutes of Health, it affects an estimated 15 million people. Each year, asthma causes over 1.5 million emergency department visits, 500,000 hospitalizations, and more than 5,500 deaths. It occurs when airways in the lungs narrow, making it hard for air to move in and out. Triggers like pollens, grasses, molds, animal dander, cigarette smoke, and dust mites cause reactions. The best way to control triggers is avoidance.

Stay indoors during specific times of the day or seasons that bring on attacks. Pay attention to air quality and pollen alerts. Avoid high-pollution zones such as busy streets. Replace carpeting with throw rugs that are machine washable. Clean bathrooms and damp areas with bleach to kill mold.

Brush and shampoo pets regularly outdoors. And don’t allow anyone to smoke in the house.

PREGNANCY COUNSELING

Caring for your baby begins before you become pregnant. Doctors and other experts are now promoting preconception care so that you can prepare to start your pregnancy on the right foot.

Preconception care aims to find and change biomedical, behavioral and social risks to a woman’s health or pregnancy through prevention and management.

Research and clinical guidelines have identified 14 areas in which preconception care could help prevent poor birth outcomes. Ask your doctor to help you understand how these areas can affect a baby’s health:

Folic acid
German measles
Diabetes
Hypothyroidism
HIV/AIDS
PKU
Oral anticoagulants
Anti-epileptic drugs
Accutane and other Retinoids
Smoking
Alcohol and drug use
Obesity
Sexually transmitted diseases
Hepatitis B
